Dodge Roll is a turn based dice-building roguelike strategy game heavily inspired by games such as Slay the Spire and Dicey Dungeons. Players build a party of rogues, mages, and warriors, and roll specialized dice to be used on combat abilities. Usable characters are randomly generated with over 30 possible abilities across the different character types. Over the course of the game, the player fights through three biomes each with unique enemies, bosses, and mechanics, to reach the final boss: Cathulu.
As lead programmer, my role was to create the foundations of the character, inventory, and combat systems for the rest of the programmers to build on, as well as to help schedule programming tasks across the teams. Due to our lack of a designated design team, I was also put in charge of much of the design and balancing of the game's combat.
Dodge Roll was one of my first experiences working on a team of more than four or five people, and as such I had a lot to learn in terms of team communication and leadership. Much of Dodge Roll's development was shrouded in conflict between artists and programmers that, as a lead, I was expected to resolve. Nevertheless, we managed to pull off what turned out to be a rather ambitious project, and the lessons I picked up along the way turned out to be invaluable in my future team projects.
Dodge Roll was developed by a team of 8 over a 4 month period using the Unity engine.
